Naples road rage crash with $5K in damage ends in driver's arrest on multiple charges

NAPLES, Fla. —

A Fort Myers man was arrested after Naples police said a minor traffic crash escalated into a road rage incident that left another driver fearing for his life Thursday morning.

According to the Naples Police Department, officers with the department’s Traffic Unit responded around 6:27 a.m. to investigate a crash involving a Toyota Tundra driven by David Shelton and a sedan driven by another person.

Investigators said the incident began with minor contact between the vehicles’ bumpers.

Police said Shelton told investigators he followed the other driver to try to document the vehicle’s license plate number after the initial contact.

During the investigation, officers determined Shelton drove recklessly by following closely behind the victim’s vehicle, driving the wrong way on the roadway and intentionally backing his truck into the victim’s car as the driver tried to get away, according to police.

Investigators said the collision caused about $5,000 in damage.

The victim told police he was unaware of the initial minor crash and feared for his life because of Shelton’s actions, according to the report.

Police later discovered Shelton was knowingly driving while his license was suspended, investigators said.

Following the investigation, officers arrested Shelton on charges of criminal mischief with property damage over $1,000, reckless driving with property damage and driving while license suspended as a second offense.
