Troopers chase speeding car in Fort Myers, arrest woman accused of DUI

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrested a woman who they say was drunk driving at speeds of more than 100 mph in Fort Myers.

According to FHP, on Saturday at around 2:30 a.m., troopers saw a Nissan driving on SR-82 near Michigan Avenue. The troopers said the car was going 80 mph in a 50 mph zone.

Troopers tried to catch up to the car to initiate a traffic stop, but instead of pulling over, the vehicle accelerated to more than 100 mph, FHP said. The troopers were finally able to stop the car on SR-82 at Ortiz Avenue.

The driver of the car was identified as Natalie Chavez, 22, FHP said. A 27-year-old passenger was also found in the vehicle.

Chavez failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest, FHP said. Her BAC at the time was 0.088.

She faces charges of reckless driving, DUI and super speeding.

FHP said they have stopped Chavez before for speeding infractions on May 2 for speeding 72 mph in a 40 mph zone on SR-82 and on April 13 for speeding on Alligator Alley at 99 mph with a young child in the car.
