Dunbar High School band director arrested, accused of sexual messages to student

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — A band director at Dunbar High School was arrested following an investigation into inappropriate communications with a student, according to a press release from the Fort Myers Police Department.

Leroy Irving Jr. of Fort Myers was taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service on May 12. Irving is employed by the Lee County School District as the band director at Dunbar High School.

The Fort Myers Police Department Special Victims Unit began investigating a criminal complaint involving Irving and a student in March. After several months of investigation, detectives learned that Irving had been communicating with the student through several social media applications and that the conversations were sexual in nature.

Irving was transported to the Lee County Jail for booking procedures. He was charged with an authority figure engaging in a romantic relationship with a student, possession of child pornography and tampering with evidence in a criminal proceeding.

The Fort Myers Police Department reminds parents to monitor their children's use of social media applications to help keep them safe from situations like this.
