Man accused of causing fatal hit-and-run crash involving bicyclist in Lehigh Acres

LEHIGH ARCES, Fla. (WINK) — The Florida Highway Patrol has arrested a man accused of fatally crashing his vehicle into a bicyclist in April.

The crash was reported to troopers and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at around midnight on April 2 near James Avenue and East 5th Street in Lehigh Acres. Deputies shortly thereafter impounded two vehicles believed to be involved in the crash.

On Wednesday, Alex Daniel Briceno Fernandez, 37, was arrested by troopers following a criminal investigation.

According to troopers, Fernandez is the suspect responsible for the fatal crash of a 32-year-old male bicyclist.

On April 2, the bicyclist was traveling on East 5th Street when he was stuck by a vehicle, critically injuring him.

Post-collision, a witness observed a grey, unknown sedan and a red, unknown SUV stopped in the area of the collision.

Both unknown vehicles fled the scene.

The male bicyclist was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced deceased.

Fernandez has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash with death and tampering with evidence. 

He remains in Lee County Jail.
