Construction crew hits old gas line on Port Charlotte High School campus, no evacuations reported

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. —

A construction crew hit an old gas line on the campus of Port Charlotte High School, causing a gas leak Thursday.

According to Claudette Smith, the Public Information Officer for Charlotte County Public Schools, the leak had no real impact on the school. The crew was working on a beach volleyball court.

By district policy, any classrooms within 300 feet of the leak would have been evacuated. However, at the time of the leak, the students in the two classrooms within the evacuation area were at lunch.

Smith said that the gas line fed the former pool on campus, but the school no longer has a pool. TECO came to the school and shut the gas line off.
