Clewiston golf course damaged by riders on e-bikes after hours

CLEWISTON, Fla. (WINK)— The Clewiston Police Department is warning residents about trespassing and vandalism at the city golf course after receiving multiple complaints of damage caused by individuals riding electric bikes and gas-powered bikes on the property after hours.

According to a press release from the department, reports indicate the greens and grass areas have been damaged through reckless riding, burnouts, and other destructive behavior. The damage has resulted in costly repairs to city property.

The police department reminded residents that the golf course is considered private property after operating hours. Anyone found trespassing or intentionally causing damage may face charges, including trespassing, criminal mischief, or vandalism.

The department is asking parents to speak with their children about respecting city property and obeying the law while operating e-bikes, scooters, golf carts, or motorized bikes. Officials said that damaging public areas affects the community financially and diminishes the enjoyment and beauty of these spaces for everyone else.

"The Clewiston Police Department believes in educating first and giving our youth guidance and understanding," the press release said. "However, repeated acts of destruction and reckless behavior will not be tolerated."

The department said it will continue working closely with city officials and property representatives to protect community property and hold those responsible accountable when necessary.
