11-acre brush fire reported in Englewood, 100% containment

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. (WINK) — The Charlotte County Fire & EMS and Englewood Fire Department are responding to a brush fire located near McCall Road and Kevitt Boulevard.

The 11-acre fire was reported to the first responders at around 4 p.m. on Friday. Currently, the fire is at 100% containment.

Firefighters continued cleaning up hot spots Friday night, leaving some neighbors nervous.

When Shannon Murphy got home from work, the first thing she noticed was the smoke. She had a bad feeling.

"I stepped out of the truck, and I'm like, something's burning," Murphy said.

Terry and Ramona Schaefer live nearby and stopped by to check it out after seeing smoke.

Ramona said she was worried, but Terry wasn't. That's because Terry Schaefer was a firefighter for almost 30 years, first in the Air Force, then at a small volunteer department in Vermont.

"I've never seen so many fire trucks in there, because the equipment that they have here is amazing," Terry Schaefer said.

The historic drought is keeping Charlotte County Fire busy. Three months ago, they responded to a brush fire in the Gulf Cove neighborhood just down the street.

Neighbors say they're grateful for the quick response.

"But you got the best fire department, you got Charlotte County EMS and the Division of Forestry taking good care of the situation," Paul Anderson said.
