Naples Airport considers American Airlines proposal for passenger flights

NAPLES, Fla. (WINK)—Commercial flights could return to Naples Airport for the first time since 2017.

American Airlines is proposing passenger service, and county commissioners are expected to review the plan next Thursday. The airport is currently best known for private jets, charters and high-profile travelers coming in and out of the city.

For people living just steps from the runway, the possibility of commercial flights is already raising questions about traffic, noise and whether the change would alter the neighborhood. American Airlines is proposing three daily arrivals and departures at Naples Airport starting in December 2026.

Dody Skogen has lived in a mobile home community across from the airport for 20 years and remembers when commercial service last operated.

"I could walk to the airport wheeling my suitcase," Skogen said.

"There wasn't a lot of traffic, which is why they didn't make it, because it was very expensive," she said.

The airline says it would use 65-seat regional jets and operate within existing curfew hours and noise limits. But neighbor Katie Rogers still has concerns.

"I think the primary concerns that we have would be increased noise pollution and increased traffic," Rogers said.

Skogen says she could support the service and appreciate not having to drive to Fort Myers, but says it comes down to one thing.

"If they were cheap enough, it would be wonderful," Skogen said.

The cost for flights and destinations have not been announced. Airport commissioners are expected to review the proposal next Thursday.
