Marco Island wastewater treatment plant referendum withdrawn by PAC after city council acts

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. (WINK) — Voters on Marco Island will not decide whether to upgrade the city's wastewater treatment plant.

The Quality of Marco Island Reuse Water Inc, a political action committee, collected enough signatures to get the issue on the ballot back in March.

But the PAC has now decided to withdraw the referendum question after the city council passed an ordinance in May to upgrade the plant and improve water quality on Marco Island.

“After careful review and consideration, the Committee has determined that withdrawing this ballot question is in the best interest of the community since the city adopted the ordinance on May 4, 2026. We respectfully ask the city take the necessary administrative steps to remove the measure from further consideration,” the PAC wrote in a letter to interim city manager Casey Lucius on May 8.

The city commissioned a study on how to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant, and now has three options on the table. At their meeting on June 1, city council will discuss funding and which option they prefer.
