Cape Coral neighborhood underwater after quick but powerful storm

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—A quick thunderstorm left streets flooded in Cape Coral Thursday night.

In Cape Coral off Del Prado Boulevard south of Veterans, cars drove through localized flooding.

WINK Weather Watcher Brandon Griggs lives just off Del Prado near Southeast 32nd Street.

"Usually, like for an inch of rain, usually like it like spits down, but then this was like my rain meter said it was like five to seven inches in between," Griggs said.

It wasn't the rain that caught his attention. Griggs lost power about 10 times.

When a WINK News photographer came by his home, the streets were dry but a waterline was stretched across the yard. Griggs said the water reached high up on his property, and the wind pushed it like waves, making it go even farther out.

Just a five-minute drive down Del Prado, water was bubbling in the grates in front of multiple homes. The city of Cape Coral says during rainy season, standing water can remain for up to 72 hours as canal levels recede.

"It's like the start of Florida rainy season," Griggs said.
