Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has launched Operation Dry Streets, increasing patrols along roads to combat impaired driving and promote safety during the busy Memorial Day weekend.
"Be responsible, it’s not hard," said Ryan Wall of Lehigh Acres. "Save other people's lives, but most importantly, save yourself."
Lt. Greg Bueno of FHP highlighted the significance of the initiative, saying, "Part of honoring those who gave so much for our freedom is to help protect the lives of others."
The operation aims to ensure everyone stays safe on the roads and reaches their destinations this Memorial Day.
"God forbid you have those individuals that take those risks; they are there to mitigate that and help protect the community," Wall said.
FHP has identified five signs of impairment to watch for: slowed reaction time, limited short-term memory, decreased hand-eye coordination, weakened concentration, and difficulty perceiving time and distance.
Lt. Bueno advised drivers to plan ahead, saying, "Have a plan before you get there because if you start having that conversation after you drink, typically you are going to think you are OK to drive."
The operation will continue through Sunday, and FHP encourages drivers to report dangerous driving by contacting STAR FHP.
"From kids to adults to anybody that does drive, just be cautious; just think about your decisions before you get behind that wheel," said Jasmine Wilds of Lehigh Acres.
FHP also emphasized the importance of patience, reminding drivers to stay calm amid heavy traffic expected during the holiday weekend.
