School District of Lee County responds after decision to cut 457 positions amid budget changes

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

The Lee County School District is cutting 457 positions, including 275 teacher roles, as part of efforts to realign its budget with state demands.

John Hahn, an early graduate of Estero High School Class of 2026, said he noticed the impact.

"I noticed when they started doing the budget cuts, it was staff that was very crucial," Hahn said.

"When we're cutting teachers that serve a very distinct role, and we're expecting to replace them with teachers who don't have experience teaching that specific thing, I think it's pretty upsetting, dangerous," Hahn added.

Last month, district leaders held a conference with the state to defend the budget and teacher cuts, while demonstrators gathered outside with signs expressing concern about the impact on educators.

The cuts extend beyond teaching positions. Kay Polston, a guidance counselor at Edison Park Creative Expressive Arts, said her counseling role was reduced to a half position, leaving her without full-time employment.

"I have to find full-time employment with benefits, and at half, you do not get benefits," Polston said.

The district spokesperson, Rob Spicker, explained the reasoning behind the staffing adjustments.

"This year, several hundred of those students were gone by the first semester, and double that by the second semester. So, now we have to recalculate how we need to staff for next year," Spicker said.

Parents have voiced concerns about the impact of these changes on education quality. India Palencia, who'd organized multiple demonstrations against the cuts, said transparency is needed from the district.

"It worries me, especially as a parent, sending our kids to our public schools, how that's going to impact the quality of education our students receive every day when they're in our schools," Palencia said.
