Imagine That: First American town declares freedom

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

The "Imagine That" crew joined Good Morning Gulf Coast on Wednesday with a colonial-era newscast, showcasing what it took to found the nation.

Christian and Kate took us back to May 27, 1776. That day, the Second Continental Congress hosted twenty-one Iroquois Indians to observe its proceedings, while preparing for the Declaration of Independence.

Richard Henry Lee reported that the American army held a parade of about three thousand men to impress the Iroquois with the strength of the United States.

Newspaper accounts stated that Generals George Washington, Horatio Gates, and Thomas Mifflin, along with Members of Congress and the Iroquois leaders, reviewed the troops.

On this date, Malden, Massachusetts became the first town to vote for and send a representative declaring independence.
