USDA data shows beef and vegetable prices rising most in 2026

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—Some beef prices have surged nearly 20% in the last year, leaving shoppers doing double takes at the meat counter.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports beef cuts like steaks and roasts have increased nearly 20% in the last year. The cost of beef has gone up at least $1 per pound across the board.

"I was also looking at rib-eyes this weekend, and the rib-eye prices have gone through the roof," said John Pacheco, a shopper. "Even at Walmart, they were $38 for two small pieces."

Lean ground beef has gone up 12.7% and nearly 20% for steak and chuck roasts. Shoppers told WINK News off-camera they often prefer to buy beef in bulk or opt for chicken because prices are more affordable.

Chicken has become the more budget-friendly option at the meat counter. Chicken breast prices have dropped 0.3%, while chicken legs bone-in have dropped by 4.3% in the last year.

Pacheco said he hasn't avoided buying beef but has learned which grocery stores have sales on different days. "It's really expensive," he said. "That's why I'm doing a buy-one, get-one-free sale. Just watch shop when it's, get a good deal on it when you can."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture shows the prices of fresh vegetables and beef are increasing the most in 2026, increasing by over 3% from March to April of 2026.
