Cape Coral residents voice safety concerns over e-bike riders on streets without sidewalks

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

Cape Coral residents are raising alarms about children riding e-bikes recklessly on streets like Diplomat Parkway, which lacks sidewalks and bike lanes.

A video shared online shows two boys riding a single e-bike along Diplomat Parkway, one rider without a helmet, traveling close to moving traffic. Craig Moore, a Cape Coral resident who rides a motorcycle, expressed concern about the risks of such behavior.

"They're just out having fun being kids but not understanding the actual consequences that come along with not following the rules right. Stop signs and speed limits and so on," Moore said.

Moore, who has experienced accidents himself, highlighted the importance of protective gear. "I might be a little bit excessive because of my experience. And, the accidents I've had, but I've got four knee braces on. You can't see them under here, but they're carbon fiber knee braces. I've got a full body chest protector front and back," he said.

Laura Swartz, another Cape Coral resident, shared her concerns as a driver. "They're dodging in between cars, running stop signs right in front of traffic. I've experienced a few times almost hitting them," Swartz said.

Diplomat Parkway’s lack of sidewalks and bike lanes has heightened safety concerns, especially with school ending next week.

Moore suggested the city create safer options for kids. "If you put a track out there, the kids would love to go out there and go ride the bikes. I'm sure they would appreciate it. I'm sure their parents would appreciate it. Giving them a location that's much safer to go to," he said.

E-bikes are regulated as traditional bicycles, requiring no license, training, or age limit. However, Cape Coral police can stop riders who drive recklessly.
