Driver who fled deadly Fort Myers motorcycle crash in 2025 sentenced to prison

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

A man was convicted on Tuesday and sentenced to more than nine years in prison for leaving the scene of a 2025 deadly crash that killed a 19-year-old motorcyclist at the intersection of Winkler Avenue and Metro Parkway in Fort Myers.

According to the Fort Myers Police Department, Carlos Antunez Riva was convicted of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. His sentence is followed by four years of probation and includes a four-year minimum mandatory prison term.

The crash happened on June 30, 2025, at 2.44 a.m., when officers responded to the crash involving the motorcycle and a BMW sedan. The police said it was determined that the motorcyclist, Michael Austin, was traveling west on Winkler Avenue when the BMW, driven by Riva, turned into a parking lot directly in front of Austin and causing the deadly crash.

Officers said after the crash, Riva fled the scene. With witness statements, evidence collected at the scene, and video and DNA evidence, Riva was identified as the driver of the BMW.
