North Naples man accused of DUI, driving the wrong way on Immokalee Road

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. —

A North Naples man was taken into custody on Friday morning after deputies with the Collier County Sheriff's Office say they saw him driving on the wrong side of the road while under the influence.

According to an arrest report, deputies were going northbound on North Tamiami Trail when they saw a car driven by Joseph Saphia, 28, on the southbound turn lane to turn eastbound on Immokalee Road.

Deputies say Saphia turned left at the green arrow, but missed the median and began going eastbound in the westbound lanes of Immokalee Road.

When deputies stopped Saphia and asked him what he was doing on the wrong side of the road, the report says he told them he was trying to take his friend home. Saphia reportedly added that he was coming home from a sports bar and went to McDonald's for food before taking his friend home.

The report says deputies noted a strong smell of alcohol on Saphia's breath and that he had slurred speech. The report adds that he failed a field sobriety test, and he was subsequently placed under arrest on a DUI charge. CCSO says Saphia later refused a breathalyzer test.

Saphia faces charges of DUI and refusal to submit to DUI testing.
