Cape Coral will soon be home to Florida’s tallest flagpole, as construction begins Monday near the Cape Coral Bridge at Bernice Braden Park.
The Lee County Department of Transportation announced the project will include the 250-foot free-standing flagpole, its foundation, and electrical work. Drivers can expect heavy truck traffic between the Welcome Center and the base of the Cape Coral Bridge on the north side of Cape Coral Parkway. The construction site is located just a few feet from the Slipaway Food Truck Park and Marina.
“Our community is already, I believe, a very patriotic community. And, you know, I just think with that flagpole here, it's going to be more reason to say, 'God bless America' forever,” said Bob Mulroy of Slipaway Food Truck Park and Marina.
Mulroy also highlighted the flagpole’s potential as a backdrop for the city’s Fourth of July celebration. “It's going to be an incredible backdrop for the Red, White and Boom. The city puts on a great program already for 4th of July, and to have that flag as the backdrop to those fireworks is going to be incredible,” he said.
Cape Coral residents, who have spent months fundraising for the project, are excited to see it come to fruition.
“Very proud to have an American flag flying, and it means a lot. And we all love our country. And why not have a beautiful flagpole at a great park, too?” said Fran Cintorino, a Cape Coral resident.
Maria Morris, another Cape Coral resident, emphasized the importance of honoring military families through the project. “It honors the veterans and the people serving here, and I think that we can't forget that; [There's] a lot of growth here, a lot of new people here. But we have a lot of veterans here that served. And I think it's a nice reminder for that, for the people of Cape Coral, people coming in and the people that live here already,” she said.
The goal is to have the flagpole completed in time for America’s 250th birthday.
