Deena McNelis, a 43-year-old woman, was found dead in her North Naples home, leaving her family and friends grieving and searching for answers as authorities continue their investigation.

Collier County deputies responded to a welfare check at McNelis’ home in the Windward Isles community on May 16 after neighbors noticed trash and mail piling up at her door. Deputies found her dead inside, but the cause of death has not yet been released.

Sherrie Prokes, McNelis’ grandmother, shared her sorrow and the words she wishes she could say to her granddaughter.

"I would tell her, Deena, I love you, and I miss you so much. I wish you were back here with us because you did not deserve this," Prokes said.

Prokes also reflected on cherished memories with McNelis.

"I can remember sitting by the pool. We just would laugh and talk and have good times. I can remember way back when, this was many years ago, when she and Brian would go out to visit her grandparents in Denver, Colorado, at Christmas time. We had such a good time," Prokes said.

Brittany Blasucci, a close friend of McNelis who is organizing her celebration of life, described the grief as overwhelming.

"I never was expecting to be planning one of my best friend's celebrations of life at such a young age. I feel like every day is a nightmare," Blasucci said.

Blasucci also expressed her desire for answers in Deena's case.

"I just want justice. We want answers. Everybody wants answers. The neighbors want answers. The community wants answers," Blasucci said.

McNelis’ celebration of life service is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
