Driver accused of striking patrol vehicle at Collier County crash scene before foot chase

What started as a response to a crash quickly escalated after Collier County deputies had to scramble out of the way of an oncoming car that sped through and hit a patrol vehicle.

According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, deputies were at the intersection of Airport-Pulling Road and Grey Oaks Boulevard at approximately 8:59 p.m. Sunday. The crash involved two vehicles, and multiple injuries were reported.

Numerous deputies, fire engines, and ambulances were at the scene when deputies spotted a silver Audi approaching at high speed. The CCSO report states the driver drove through the crash scene, hit a marked patrol vehicle with a deputy inside, and came close to hitting two other deputies who were directing traffic.

According to the report, the collision with the CCSO patrol vehicle caused damage to its side and tore its push bumper, which resulted in an estimated $5,000 worth of damage. The deputy who was inside the patrol vehicle was not injured.

Deputies said the driver continued northbound and led officers on a pursuit through Pine Woods Circle at an estimated speed of 80 mph through the residential area.

The driver, later identified as Luke Sage, 28, exited the vehicle and was ordered to the ground, but ran away from deputies, the report states.

Deputies used a Taser to catch Sage after he ran several houses down the street.

Sage was taken to a hospital after suffering injuries. The report states that hospital staff drew blood from Sage; however, deputies did not obtain his blood-alcohol results.

According to the sheriff's office, shortly before the incident, a person called 911 to report a suspected drunk driver in a silver Audi had just exited off I-75 and was westbound on Golden Gate Parkway.

Deputies said the call was made at 9:37 p.m., approximately three minutes before the incident, and the last update noted that the car turned directly towards the Airport-Pulling Rd crash scene.

Sage is facing charges of fleeing and eluding, hit-and-run, DUI, DUI with property damage, and resisting an officer without violence.
