Lee County offers Mighty Mussels tickets for battery recycling at upcoming home game

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— Lee County Solid Waste is partnering with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels to encourage proper battery disposal through a special collection event at the team's home game on June 12.

According to a press release, residents who bring lithium-ion or rechargeable batteries for proper disposal will receive a complimentary pair of tickets to a future 2026 home game.

Participants can drop off batteries at the Household Chemical Waste collection truck in front of the stadium entrance. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium in the Lee Health Sports Complex, 14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway.

The press release states that household alkaline batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and button batteries, can be disposed of in regular garbage cans. Any other type of battery, including rechargeable, nickel-cadmium, automotive, lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries, should be recycled at the Household Chemical Waste and Electronics Recycling Facility at 6441 Topaz Court.

The press release warns residents not to place batteries in recycling carts, as they can ignite and cause fires in collection trucks. Lee County Solid Waste is encouraging residents to be aware of products containing lithium-ion batteries and dispose of them properly.

These batteries can be found in the following products:

  • Electronic devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, computer peripherals, Bluetooth devices and smart wearables
  • Power tools
