Elyse Chengery set for expanded anchor role at Gulf Coast News

Gulf Coast News is pleased to announce that Elyse Chengery will be expanding her anchor responsibilities.

Chengery will now serve as one of the primary anchors for Gulf Coast News on NBC at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. She joins anchor Peter Busch and Chief Meteorologist Allyson Rae on the newscasts.

Chengery will continue her anchor role at 7 p.m. on Gulf Coast ABC.

Since joining Gulf Coast News in January 2024, Chengery has become an important and trusted voice for Southwest Florida viewers, bringing a deep commitment to local storytelling to every newscast.

During her time with Gulf Coast News, Chengery has helped lead major breaking news coverage, including reporting live from the scene of a Bank of America hostage situation. She also gave viewers an exclusive look inside immigration enforcement in Lee County during a ride-along with ICE agents.

"Elyse has made an immediate impact in our newsroom and with our viewers,” said Tim Klutsarits, News Director for Gulf Coast News. “She is a strong journalist, a steady presence on the anchor desk, and someone who understands the responsibility we have to serve this community every day."

Chengery has been a key part of helping make the 7 p.m. newscast on ABC the No. 1 newscast in its time period. Her career has also included extensive coverage of major weather events, including Hurricane Ian; coverage that earned her Edward R. Murrow Award recognition.

"Elyse represents the kind of journalist and communicator we want at the center of our coverage," said Darrel Lieze-Adams, President and General Manager of Gulf Coast News. "She connects with viewers, elevates the work around her and brings credibility, warmth and professionalism to every broadcast. Her expanded role is an important step as we continue strengthening the Gulf Coast News brand across WBBH, WZVN and all of our platforms."

Chengery is a proud graduate of the University of Toledo and was honored to come back and serve as a Commencement Speaker.

"I am honored and excited to take on this expanded role with Gulf Coast News," said Elyse Chengery. "The Gulf Coast is an incredible place to live, and I am grateful for the trust our viewers place in us every day. I look forward to continuing to tell the stories that matter, working alongside Peter Busch, Allyson Rae and our talented Gulf Coast News team, and serving viewers."

Chengery's expanded anchor responsibilities will take effect immediately on Friday.
