MARCO ISLAND, Fla. (WINK) — The City of Marco Island is exploring the costs and logistics of returning local law enforcement services to the Collier County Sheriff's Office as officials consider potential budget impacts from Florida's ongoing property tax debate.
During a June 1 City Council meeting, several council members acknowledged that the city may need to identify ways to reduce spending if future changes to property tax revenues are significant.
The Marco Island Police Department has provided law enforcement services within city limits since its establishment in 1999. However, the Sheriff's Office also maintains a presence on the island and works in partnership with local police when needed.
The island's services are primarily funded through local taxes, with property taxes serving as the largest and most stable source of revenue. Meanwhile, Florida lawmakers recently approved a proposal to expand homestead tax exemptions, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has continued to advocate for broader property tax relief measures.
Council members ultimately agreed to direct the city manager to explore the costs and logistics of potentially shifting local law enforcement services back to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.
"It's just useful insight," said councilor Stephen Gray.
Not everyone supported the idea.
"It sends a horrible message to our police force that we'd actually consider going back to Collier County," said Chairman Darrin Palumbo.
Despite those concerns, council members voted 4-3 to direct the city manager to research the issue with the Collier County Sheriff's Office and gather information on potential costs and operational impacts.
City leaders emphasized that the discussion was exploratory and that no decisions have been made regarding the future of the Marco Island Police Department.
Florida voters will decide in November whether the homestead tax proposal becomes law.
