South Cape Run Club brings free Global Running Day 5K to Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—Dozens of runners and walkers laced up to celebrate Global Running Day at a free community event hosted by the South Cape Run Club.

The second annual race brought together participants of all levels, from those chasing personal records to others simply enjoying the journey. The first finisher crossed the line with a time around 19 minutes.

Jamie Ayers, a cheerleader with South Cape Run Club, stood along the route encouraging runners with shouts like "you're here, you're not on your couch" to keep them going. For many participants, the event represented something deeper than competition.

"It's really about community, it's about movement, it's about everyone coming together, doing what they love," said Ariana Murillo, leader of South Cape Run Club.

The event connected runners, walkers and local businesses in a celebration of wellness and community. Joshua Lopez, a runner with Optimum Wellness, highlighted the club's regular Wednesday meetups that support local businesses while building connections.

"We're promoting health in the community," Lopez said. "We always get together on Wednesdays. We all meet, we support local businesses, we have a good time, and we're making connections and growing a community together."

Cheers erupted as runners crossed the finish line, where friends and family waited. The first-place finisher said the community atmosphere keeps him coming back.

"But for me, it's everything you can find here: the family, you can find everything, friends, the whole community," he said.

Organizers announced the third annual Global Running Day 5K is already scheduled for next year.
