CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—A UPS driver rushed into a burning home to save a woman's life.
Adam Cannon, born and raised in Cape Coral, has driven his big brown truck since 2010.
"Coming up on 17 years. So, it's been great. I've enjoyed it," Cannon said. "Get in my truck, and you know, deliver hundreds of packages a day, and go home to my beautiful family."
On Wednesday, Cannon did more than deliver packages along Southwest 12th Place.
"I heard a faint cry, sounded like help, and looked up and saw smoke kind of coming from the eaves from a house a couple doors down," he said.
Without hesitation, Cannon rushed into the home to get a woman out to safety before firefighters could arrive to put out the smoke and flames. It was a home he had only stopped at before to deliver packages.
"Every day you're kind of at a different point at a different time, and, but God's timing is always perfect," he said. "He had me in the right place at the right time, and I'm glad that was the minute that I was delivering the stop that I was, where I was able to get over there and be able to help."
The Cape Coral Fire Department says the woman is now recovering in the hospital from minor burns. A dog and cat that were inside the home did not survive.
But firefighters are recognizing Cannon for the 'S' he puts into UPS -- service. As he helped save a stranger's life.
"My grandpa and my dad both worked in delivery their whole lives, so they kind of instilled in me growing up that, you know, you never know what somebody's going through, and it's a crazy world," he said. "So, it's, even if you're there for 7 seconds or 14 seconds, you know, you might be the one little bright light in somebody's day, so just, you know, be as positive as you can."
Cannon says he will continue to keep the homeowner in his prayers and hopes everything turns around for her. The fire department says the cause of the fire could have been a cigarette or lighter, or even both.
