A UPS driver in Cape Coral rushed into a burning home on Southwest 12th Place to save a woman after hearing her cries for help, despite having no firefighting experience.
"There was no doubt, I knew I had to do what I had to do," Adam Cannon said.
Cannon, who has been a UPS driver for over a decade, said he was delivering packages when he heard someone calling for help.
"I walked up to deliver to the house, and I heard, you know, what sounded like somebody saying help!" Cannon said.
When he approached the house, Cannon found an older woman inside who was unable to walk on her own.
"When I got up to the house, I saw there was an older, sweet lady inside that you know, couldn't really walk on her own," Cannon said.
Cannon brought the woman outside to safety, away from the heat and smoke, and called 911. The Cape Coral Fire Department arrived minutes later and extinguished the fire.
Sadly, the cat and dog inside the home did not survive.
"I heard a dog bark. I think he was. I tried calling out for him. Name is Diamond. And, but I don't know if he was, you know, in a room or whatnot," Cannon said.
For his actions, Cannon was awarded a community recognition coin by the Cape Coral Fire Department.
"I'm definitely not a firefighter, just a local UPS man," Cannon said.
Reflecting on the experience, Cannon said he was grateful to have been there at the right time.
"God's timing is perfect, man. That, for whatever reason, he had me at that point at that minute of the day. And, I'm glad I could be there to do it, because that's, you never know," Cannon said.
The city has deemed the home unsafe, with a red notice posted on the property. The Cape Coral Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
