Cape Coral construction blocks disabled vet's driveway for days

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—A disabled Army veteran reached out to WINK News after construction blocked his driveway for a day and a half, leaving him unable to leave his home.

Gary Bailey said construction in his neighborhood off Kismet Parkway, near the intersection with Del Prado Boulevard, has been ongoing for more than two months. WINK News was at the scene where construction equipment and roadwork had taken over the area.

Photos Bailey sent to WINK News showed his driveway completely blocked. The City of Cape Coral said this is part of North 1's Utilities Expansion Project, extending water, sewer, and irrigation systems in North Cape.

Bailey said the work left him unable to leave his home. The construction caused him to cancel and reschedule doctor's appointments for his mother-in-law, who lives with them and has Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

"They blocked our driveways; they kept us from getting out of our house. Then they tried to tell us to go park down with four houses down," Bailey said. "I got a mother-in-law, 79 years old, who has congestion, heart failure, and COPD. She can't walk that far."

The City of Cape Coral said residents can check out its weekly roadwork report for the area or contact Cape Coral UEP at 227-833-3837.
