Englewood’s Cherie DeVaux makes more history with Belmont Stakes win

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. (WINK) — Cherie DeVaux’s breakthrough year in horse racing now includes another landmark win.

DeVaux, who grew up in Englewood, trained Golden Tempo to a win in the 158th Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.

The victory came five weeks after Golden Tempo won the Kentucky Derby, making DeVaux the first woman to train winners in two different Triple Crown races.

Golden Tempo rallied from last to first under jockey Jose Ortiz, crossing the finish line in 2:03.49.

DeVaux graduated from Lemon Bay High School and attended Florida Gulf Coast University before building one of the top stables in horse racing.

During her time in Southwest Florida, she competed in barrel racing before eventually moving into the thoroughbred racing world.

Golden Tempo did not run in the Preakness Stakes, ending a chance at a Triple Crown sweep. DeVaux and her team instead chose to rest the horse before the Belmont.

DeVaux is now the second woman to train a Belmont Stakes winner, joining Jena Antonucci, who won the race in 2023 with Arcangelo.
