Two fires, one involving an RV and another an apartment, broke out in Fort Myers.
"The flames had caught on to one of the trees back there. You can see kind of things are kind of blackened. For a couple minutes, it was a fireball and got into the power lines," neighbor Matthew Prichard said.
Prichard said he was sitting in his home when he noticed the smell of something burning and rushed outside to see a giant plume of smoke rising from behind nearby houses.
"It got darker and darker. By the time you could see the flames, it was pretty dark. There was ash in the air is like oh, great, it's snowing," Prichard said.
As crews worked to extinguish the RV fire, firefighters rushed to Broadway, where an apartment unit had also caught fire. Residents were evacuated as the flames spread.
Drewin Scurry, who lived inside the unit, said, "They said I can't go up day to day because this suit is damaged. This does smoke damage. The bathroom in the kitchen fell in. So, I won't be able to go in here tonight."
Firefighters say it started after a pot was left on the stove.
"It could have been a lot worse. I'm glad you know that. I'm okay. They are supposed to put me up in the hotel tonight. So that's that," Scurry said.
"Things worked out for the best. No one was hurt. You know, I mean, there's going to be a little bit of municipal infrastructure damage that there has to be done. But, and whoever the renters are, it's not their problem. It's a landlord's problem," Prichard said.
Firefighters confirmed that no injuries occurred in either the RV or apartment fires.
