6.1 Cuba earthquake felt across Southwest Florida

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. (WINK)—Southwest Florida residents felt the effects of a 6.1 magnitude earthquake near Cuba, with some noticing shaking inside their homes and others feeling vibrations beneath their feet while sitting on the beach.

David Boggs from Marco Island realized something felt different when the aftershock reached Southwest Florida. "They had an earthquake in Cuba and we felt it all the way here," Boggs said.

"You never know what's going to happen here," he said.

A few miles away, Jeffrey Iorio said his dogs sensed something before he did. "Not a normal bark and then they started barking I don't hear anything or see anything," Iorio said.

When he looked around his home, the signs became impossible to miss. "I look up here and this was moving like this swaying—mother nature up to craziness," Iorio said.

At Lowdermilk Park, Larry Plack said he felt the shaking in a completely different way. "My feet started bubbling in the sand it went from the bottom of my feet all the way up to my knees," Plack said.

The sensation lasted only a few seconds, but Plack said it's one he'll never forget. "They said that was 6.1 wasn't that far away from here, really, 90 miles, maybe, and could happen anywhere," Plack said.

While the shaking only lasted a few seconds for most people, many said the experience was unsettling simply because earthquakes are so uncommon in Southwest Florida.
