The former Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track in Bonita Springs may be home to a new family-friendly entertainment center called Oakes Landing, featuring restaurants, pools, and playgrounds, according to plans submitted by Oakes Farms, Inc., owner Alfie Oakes.
"I totally support this project. I think it would be great for the Bonita area, reviving as they're doing on Old 41 with restaurants and venues down there," said Catherine Cavallo, a Bonita Springs resident.
The once-vibrant landmark is now covered by weeds and wildlife. Several companies use the space for storage and parking, while the northern end of the lot is home to a poker room and restaurant.
Some residents are excited about the possibility of a new gathering spot.
"I think they need some more entertainment options, especially for younger people. So I've got two young kids that are always looking for stuff to do. So I think it's a great idea," said Travis Sanders, a Bonita Springs resident.
"I think it's a great idea because it's in a central location, and I think people of all ages will enjoy it," said Claudia Laines, another Bonita Springs resident.
Elevate SWFL, another company, plans to open a wellness and fitness center on part of the 99-acre plot.
Oakes Farms was scheduled to present its project to the Bonita Springs Planning and Zoning Board last month but filed a continuance for 60 to 90 days.
Efforts to reach Alfie Oakes for comment have not yet been successful.
