Estero crash kills 67-year-old Naples woman, driver charged with DUI manslaughter

ESTERO, Fla. (WINK)— A Naples man is facing DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges after a deadly crash that killed a 67-year-old Naples woman.

Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened Monday afternoon near the intersection of U.S. 41 and Coconut Road. Tire marks trailing off into the ditch and debris left behind mark where troopers say a deadly chain of events unfolded.

FHP says 35-year-old Ian Nabbs was driving a Ford pickup truck north on U.S. 41 at a high rate of speed just after 2 p.m. Troopers say the woman was turning right onto northbound U.S. 41 from Palma de Coco Drive when the truck slammed into the side of her van.

The woman was ejected from the van and died at the scene.

"It was, it was crazy," a witness said.

Witnesses say it all happened in seconds.

"We were at the light, my boyfriend saw the truck go over the curb," the witness said. "My boyfriend hopped out and helped the guy out of the truck, and then once he was out, my boyfriend ran across the street over to the van."

She told WINK News that people immediately rushed to help as the scene turned chaotic. She also described Nabbs' behavior after the crash.

"He was a little aggressive when people were trying to walk towards him," the witness said. "He did seem a little out of it when he got out. I wasn't sure at the time if it was from just the accident itself or if he was under the influence of something."

Larry Coggins with Mothers Against Drunk Driving says impaired driving remains a persistent problem in Florida.

"About a third of every vehicle fatality in Florida is related to impairment," said Coggins, MADD state executive director. "So, just see how many lives would be saved if everybody did the right thing and never got behind the wheel after they've been drinking."

He says, despite rideshare options and public awareness, about 3,000 people are still killed every year in Florida, with impairment playing a major role.

FHP says Nabbs is now charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.
