LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — A former Island Coast High School teacher accused of testing positive for cocaine and allowing students to vape in her classroom is a step closer to losing her job.
The Lee County School Board is holding a judicial hearing on the recommendation to terminate Nuria Acuna's employment. The district filed a petition to fire Acuna last September.
After a state hearing request was filed, she was suspended without pay pending the outcome. District documents show Acuna tested positive for cocaine following a drug test last February.
Investigators said students reported she allowed vaping in class, shared her personal vape device and sold snacks to students. In 2025, WINK News Investigates reporter Olivia Jean spoke with a former student about her experience.
The hearing will determine the final outcome of Acuna's employment with the district.
