After two years of experiencing homelessness and living at Youth Haven, Maritsa Irizarry is getting a fresh start with a place of her own.
St. Matthew's House, Youth Haven, and GL Homes partnered to help fund and furnish Irizarry's first apartment, providing support as she transitions to independent living.
As part of the effort, Irizarry was treated to a shopping spree at the St. Matthew's House Boutique Thrift Store, where she selected furniture and household items for her new home.
"I'm very excited to see where my future takes me. That's the most exciting thing," Irizarry said.
Leaders with the nonprofits said they are proud of Irizarry's progress. When she entered the program, she was struggling with a chronic illness and faced significant challenges.
Over the past two years, they said, she has worked to improve her health and build the skills needed to live independently.
Today, Irizarry is moving into her own apartment and beginning a new chapter, supported by a community that believes in her success.
