CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — Cape Coral homeowners will need to navigate a new digital system before starting their next home repair project.
The city is moving owner-builder permits online starting July 1.
Some residents are also trying to figure out whether their project may qualify for a new state permit exemption.
Dan Herring, a former contractor who has called Cape Coral home for five years, said the digital method could have benefits.
"I think it'd make it easier, as long as the response time was pretty good," Herring said.
However, he acknowledged past experiences with the permitting process. "It would take a long time, beyond a doubt," Herring said. "Every experience I've had, it takes a long time."
The city told WINK News the new digital method should improve efficiency and accessibility. Residents who need help can come to City Hall, where staff can assist with navigating the process.
Charles Lee, another Cape Coral resident, raised concerns about access to technology. "It all depends on how suave a person is with technology," Lee said. "I've had some conveniences of applying for things online. It turned out to be a headache."
Herring also noted potential delays during storm season. "A week or two, but it's probably going to be longer than that, because, especially after a storm, it's gonna take months," Herring said.
The permitting exemption is not automatic. The city says it's best to follow specific steps before beginning work.
Despite the move to digital, Herring appreciates having in-person options available. "It'd be great if I could walk in and talk to somebody, but it's, it is difficult to do," Herring said. "I have had a pretty good experience with the city when I've talked to them. It does take some time for them to get back to you, but they're busy."
