The City of Cape Coral will hold a ceremony on July 4 to raise the flag of their 250 ft. flagpole built to honor America's 250th birthday.Starting at 2 p.m., the city says the ceremony will celebrate the completion of the city's "community-funded effort to build the largest free-standing American Flagpole in Florida." The event will be open to the public with no reservation required, and will culminate with the flag being raised for the first time.In a news release the city said the 250 ft. flagpole is being built to honor America's 250th birthday and to stand as a lasting symbol of freedom, democracy and unity in Cape Coral. The project, first proposed by Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn, was approved by Cape Coral's City Council in March. It was funded through community and private donations. City officials say fundraising is still short of the initial $500,000 goal.Construction of the flagpole started in the beginning of June and is expected to be completed by July 3. Traffic delays near the end of the Cape Coral Bridge are expected until the project is completed.Previous Coverage:Cape Coral city manager plans to install Florida's tallest American flag Cape Coral residents divided over 250-foot flagpole project proposalCape Coral launches fundraiser to build Florida’s tallest free-standing flagpoleCape Coral votes to continue discussing 250-foot flagpole project funded by donationsCape Coral approves contract for 250-foot flagpole at Bernice Braden ParkConstruction on Cape Coral's 250 ft. flagpole at Bernice Braden Park begins MondayCape Coral begins construction on Florida's tallest flagpoleDOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
