ALVA, Fla. (WINK)—The Lee County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man for aggravated animal cruelty after deputies says he refused to get his dog medical help after it was hit by a car.
Pet owners were shocked to hear someone would let their pet suffer.
"That's just cruel to an animal. It's just like honestly wrong because animals are supposed to be your best friends," Selena said.
"I have a dog. She's two years old. And honestly, if she had got hit by a car or anything would've happened, I would wanna get her medically, like, fixed and stuff too. I couldn't be able to sit there and, like, be like, 'Oh,' like, 'That's just okay to deal with,' because that's not okay," Llasenia said.
The arrest report says on June 10, Crandall started yelling at the woman he was staying with, Gabriella Guerra. The arrest report says he was grabbing her face and arms. A family member staying in the home interrupted the argument and kicked Crandall out.
He left and took Loki with him. When deputies located Crandall, he was in a ditch with his dog resisted arrest.
Deputies noticed Loki was panting in pain and dragging his back legs. The arrest report says Guerra told deputies the dog had been hit by an SUV four days earlier when Crandall and Guerra were driving for Uber Eats.
The arrest report says since the crash, Guerra and her family member had asked Crandall to take Loki to the vet, but Crandall wanted Loki to heal at home. He told the Guerras the vet would put Loki down.
"Even if like you don't have like the money to go do like medical stuff with it, you could at least like take it to the shelter and be like, 'Listen, I can't afford to pay for it right now, but like I need help with this animal because I don't want it to suffer anymore,'" Selena and Llasenia said.
The sheriff's office says Loki received medical treatment and is expected to be okay, but needs further assessments for his spinal injury.
"If a human was like that, what would you do? You would immediately go to the hospital, not just sit there and be like, 'Oh, it's okay, your bone can heal itself,'" they said.
Crandall was arrested for battery, resisting arrest and aggravated animal cruelty.
