Fort Myers will host its first-ever Pride event this Saturday in the downtown River District, featuring a drag show, road closures, and police security. The celebration will take place along First Street, with the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center illuminated in rainbow colors. Pride flags are displayed on rooftops, and downtown businesses are decorated with rainbow-themed items.Jamie Lynn of Fort Myers said, "I think it's an important thing and a beautiful thing."Ciara LaFon of Lehigh Acres added, "We don't get much representation down here. We always have to hide and tuck away." The event will include a stage hosting drag queens on Saturday night at 6 p.m. Alex Cahill, organizer of SWFL Pride, said, "It's going to be a very family-friendly drag show. Everything is going to be appropriate. Our DJ has screened the music beforehand." While the Fort Myers Police Department declined to comment on security measures, Cahill confirmed, "There absolutely will be police security. We're going to have the streets barricaded off so no cars can drive in." Some attendees are preparing for potential protests.LaFon said, "See, I have my emergency whistle on me at all times. If they start coming at me protesting, I'm hollering." Road closures will affect First Street between Jackson Street and Royal Palm Avenue, as well as Lee Street from Bay Street to Richmond Street. City leaders advise drivers to expect delays and plan ahead when navigating downtown Fort Myers. Protesters are expected at the event, but organizers and attendees remain hopeful for a positive celebration of Pride.DOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
