ORTONA, Fla. (WINK)—A proposed RV park in Glades County is drawing pushback from residents who say the development could change the character of their quiet community.
The project would rezone nearly 73 acres at the corner of Ortona Locks Road and Williams Road in Ortona for a planned RV resort.
A petition opposing the project has gathered more than 100 signatures as residents prepare for another public meeting next month.
Emily Worth started an online petition opposing the project after attending a recent Glades County Planning and Zoning meeting.
"Based on all the objections that the citizens had, their legitimate concerns, factual statements about the resources that we have in this town, we kind of thought that it would get denied," Worth said.
The petition has grown to more than 100 signatures, with people sharing concerns about traffic, local wildlife, and emergency response times. Worth pointed to what she calls a dangerous intersection near the proposed entrance.
"It's a huge safety concern. We have resource issues in Glades, so there are no full fire departments in Glades County," Worth said. "If the fire is somewhere where they have to block the roads, these are two dead in roads, so there's only one way in, one way out."
Worth believes that large RVs could pose safety issues on the curving roadway. She said drivers would be turning left across traffic with their trucks and RVs near a blind spot around a curve.
"They're actually going to be turning left across traffic with their trucks and their RVs, and there's a pretty bad blind spot coming around the curve there that could cause a massive, massive collision," Worth said.
Seventeen-year-old Chance James said he's concerned about what more traffic could mean for young drivers like him. He cited safety as a new driver and wanted to keep traffic down in the area.
"More so, the safety for me as a new driver, just wanted to keep the traffic down in this area," James said.
