A Fort Myers Shores couple was arrested on Wednesday after they were accused of neglecting their dog, a nine-year-old Newfoundland named Sophia.According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home on Fifth Street in reference to a dog that appeared severely neglected on April 27. The sheriff's office said they observed the homeowners, Jennifer and Robert Rorick, dog, Sophia, covered in sores and open wounds from scratching. Sophia also reportedly had crust built up on her eyes and appeared to be suffering from a severe skin condition. According to the warrant, records from Jennifer showed Sophia was last seen by a veterinarian in 2022. Sophia's sister, Tamara, appeared not to have any skin issues but had long nails.Sophia was then taken by the Lee County Domestic Animal Services to receive care from a veterinarian.According to the sheriff's office, a medical exam confirmed that Sophia was suffering from multiple chronic conditions that were reportedly left untreated for four years. The warrant noted the conditions included infected skin and ears, Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS), also known as dry eye, and the length of her nails.The couple was arrested on one count of aggravated animal cruelty each.
