SANIBEL, Fla. — Blind Pass Beach on Sanibel Island is a popular summer spot, but the strong winds and dangerous currents there are keeping beachgoers on high alert.
Wind currents at the beach are running between 10 and 15 mph, and families say they are making sure to stay close to shore.
Lisa, a grandmother visiting with her grandson Beau, said she and his mom Brittany keep a close eye on him near the water at all times.
"We just make sure we don't get out there very far, that we can still get our footing. Definitely make sure that he has his life preserver on and I have a hand on him, or Brittany does at all times to make sure," Lisa said.
With one of the hottest days of the summer drawing crowds to the beach Thursday afternoon, visitors say they know to keep their distance from the deeper water.

Sanibel visitor Jan Carlos offered a word of caution, saying "We have to be very careful with the young people; they need supervision."
Carol Hapke, another visitor, described how the water was moving around them even while standing on higher sand.
"The water was coming up all around us to go to that little pond area that's stagnant," Hapke said.
Her husband Rob pointed out that outgoing tides can be especially risky for young children.
"I think probably some of the worst times is when the tide's going out, because then you know little ones get out there in the current in the past and they can't control it," Rob said.
Frequent visitors recommend staying hydrated, bringing life vests and keeping a close watch near the water.
First grader Beau summed it up simply, saying "Stay safe."
