CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — Security cameras captured the dramatic moment a car crashed through a fence and into a Cape Coral backyard Saturday afternoon, throwing two men from the vehicle before it burst into flames.
The crash happened off Tropicana Parkway East while the homeowners were on vacation.
Video obtained by WINK News shows the vehicle traveling off the roadway, crossing through a neighboring yard and slamming through a fence before coming to rest in the backyard. The security footage, recorded from multiple camera angles, shows two men being ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Despite the violent impact, both men got up and walked away from the wreckage moments later.
Family members of the homeowners rushed to the property after receiving a call from Cape Coral police.
"When we got here, we couldn't believe what we were seeing," said Alberto Herrera, the homeowner's brother.
Herrera said what surprised him most was that the people inside the car survived.
"It's astonishing because in an accident of this magnitude, the people inside the car were thrown out and walked away," Herrera said.
Moments after the crash, the vehicle caught fire.
Firefighters responded to extinguish the flames while first responders treated the two men involved. Both were later transported from the scene by ambulance. WINK News is working to confirm their conditions.
By the time crews removed the vehicle, the damage stretched far beyond the backyard where the car came to rest.
Tire marks cut across a neighboring front yard, trees were damaged, and a section of fencing was destroyed.
The homeowners did not want to appear on camera but spoke with WINK News over FaceTime. They said they are grateful no one was home at the time.
Herrera said the incident should serve as a reminder for drivers to slow down and pay attention behind the wheel.
"It's not just their lives at risk, but the lives of others," Herrera said.
He added that speeding has been an ongoing concern in the area.
"Drivers need to be more careful on this road. People are always speeding here," Herrera said.
As of Saturday evening, Cape Coral police had not released details about what led up to the crash. WINK News has reached out to the department for additional information and is waiting to learn the conditions of the two men involved and whether any charges are expected.
