CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — A routine rescue call turned into something a little unexpected when firefighters pulled a coyote pup from a canal.
Engine 9 and Rescue 9 from the Cape Coral Fire Department responded to a report of a dog in a canal at Britannia Lake, according to the department.
The pup swam from shore to shore as firefighters tried to reach it, making the rescue tricky.
A nearby kayaker, Denae Judd, stepped in to help by monitoring the coyote's location and alerting the crew when it crawled under a dock.

Firefighters then entered the water and pulled the exhausted pup from the space beneath the dock.
The coyote was too worn out to be released on its own, so crews brought it to East West Veterinary Care Center, which will coordinate transferring it to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife for care.
For her help during the rescue, firefighters honored Judd with a Community Recognition Coin.
