LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — Before the Fourth of July celebrations even start, law enforcement has seen people making dangerous decisions on the road.
At least twelve people were booked into the Lee County Jail for driving under the influence since Saturday night. The Lee County Sheriff's Office says if you plan to celebrate this Fourth of July, you need a backup plan.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office tells WINK News its deputies have booked 15 people for driving under the influence since Friday, and Charlotte County is looking into its numbers.
As the holiday approaches, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno has a clear message.
"Don't drink and get behind the wheel. It's that simple," Marceno said.
He says they will be out in full force, using drones, helicopters and undercover units to get drunk drivers off the road.
"We're going to be out in full force. Please have fun, but be responsible," Marceno said.
With the big holiday typically bringing people outside to enjoy the beaches, barbecue and fireworks, Marceno says they will be making sure people stay safe off the roads too.
"Medically we respond because people are on the beach or they're in the sun, they don't realize it, and the sun just, it overcomes them, right? So hydrate, make sure you're eating, make sure you're wearing the sun block," Marceno said.
Marceno says deputies will be out patrolling the roads, looking to keep dangerous drivers off the roads.
