MARCO ISLAND, Fla. (WINK) — A deceased dolphin was found on a Marco Island beach, prompting a response from multiple agencies.
Marco Island Police responded to the beach area between the JW Marriott and Residents' Beach after a sea turtle observer discovered the dolphin.
There is no indication that the discovery is suspicious in nature.
Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) were notified and responded to the scene.
A Collier County Sheriff's Office deputy assisted by moving the dolphin higher on the beach so it could be safely recovered by FWC Southwest Region biologists.
FWC staff then transported the dolphin to a laboratory for further examination, a necropsy, and to collect samples.
The dolphin was an approximately 5-foot-long female in moderate decomposition.
Authorities are asking the public to avoid that area of the beach while agencies carry out their investigation and recovery efforts.
FWC says it is important to report dead or live beached dolphins, manatees or whales to the FWC's 24-hour wildlife alert at 888-404-3922.
Officials also warn never to push animals that are dead or alive back into the water, as it can cause further injury, delay treatment and cause weakened animals to drown.
Trained responders will make contact and coordinate a response.
