FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—A new pedestrian hybrid beacon will turn on along the Palm Beach Boulevard corridor.
The Florida Department of Transportation says it's the first of six new crossing signals along the Palm Beach Boulevard corridor to improve safety. The beacon will be active for people trying to cross Palm Beach Boulevard and Carolina.
The system is simple. You walk up and push a button, the lights above the road start flashing, and then traffic gets a red light so you can safely go across the street.
Over the past several years, WINK News has covered deadly crashes along Palm Beach Boulevard. With this first beacon, it's a major step to keep the community safe.
The agency is installing six of them at midblock crossings along the Palm Beach Boulevard corridor. FDOT says the locations were chosen after looking at crash history.
FDOT District One Director of Public Information Janella Newsome says the project is focused on protecting people who use the corridor every day.
"FDOT just refuses to accept traffic fatalities as an inevitable, if you will. Our target is zero," Newsome said.
FDOT says the rest of the beacons will turn on by this fall.
