Fort Myers city leaders are working on traffic improvements for State Road 82 near Forum Boulevard to address ongoing congestion and prepare for increased traffic from new developments, including an Amazon facility set to open in 2027.
Scott Evans, a Lee County resident, described the heavy traffic during peak hours.
"Between 6 and 9, it's always horrible. A lot of traffic, especially during the school year," Evans said.
Some residents are growing increasingly frustrated with the traffic conditions.
"Debating on whether I should move or not? To be honest with you," said Jason La Rosa, another Lee County resident.
Fort Myers City Council plans to move forward with temporary and permanent traffic lights, as well as road, drainage and lighting upgrades, to alleviate congestion.
When Amazon's Project Rainforest development was first announced, city officials anticipated significant traffic impacts in the area. Now officials say these improvements are necessary to accommodate not only Amazon's facility but also several other residential and commercial projects nearby.
Evans shared his thoughts on the upcoming changes and suggested additional measures.
"I know the new construction is going to be coming up, which is great for the community. I just feel like maybe they should expand the widths of the road for a few more lanes," Evans said.
The improvements are being discussed during a Fort Myers Special Council meeting.
