CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — Big changes are coming to one Lee County school this summer after its roof was ripped off during Hurricane Ian nearly four years ago.
A maze of trailers has been home for students and staff at Hector A. Cafferata Elementary for nearly four years. Principal Jason Kurtz said it's been challenging for their staff to try and navigate this unique environment.
"It's been an adventure, for sure," Kurtz said.
The adventure is not over yet. The sound of construction signals progress for the school as Principal Kurtz said they'll take over a massive building in August with nearly double the amount of students.
"We are transitioning to a K to eight school in August. So, we're going to be welcoming some sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, and so we're going to be about 900 this first year, and then that should jump to well over 1000 the following year," Kurtz said.
The new school is called Hector A. Cafferata Jr. Elementary School.
While they slowly move their belongings over to this next chapter, they won't forget their last.
"A school is not defined by the building, it's really about the people, the students, the teachers and their families, and we've just shown that Hector A. Cafferata can be successful no matter where you put us," Kurtz said.
Principal Kurtz said the students' first day is set for Aug. 11. They plan to start tearing down the portable classrooms in August.
