NAPLES, Fla. (WINK) — What was once considered a niche game is finding a new audience in Southwest Florida.
The Naples Mahjong Club is attracting players of all ages who are looking to learn the strategy-based tile game while building new friendships along the way. Weekly gatherings bring together beginners and experienced players for an afternoon of competition, conversation, and community.
The club was started by Cristina Picascio, Brittany Hyman, and Adrienne Capwell after the three Naples moms were looking for a new activity to do together.
"At first, we considered a book club, but we wanted to play a game. Something that would challenge our minds," Picascio said.
After teaching several friends how to play, the trio decided to open their gatherings to the public.
"At first we had a few people come out, but now we're selling out events," Capwell said.
Mahjong, a game that originated in China and has grown in popularity across the United States, requires players to build winning tile combinations through skill, strategy, and a little luck. But for Hyman, the game offers much more than competition.
"We have created this social circle. You can be as competitive or as relaxed as you want. A lot of people leave here with new friends," Hyman said.
The Mahjong events are open to players of all skill levels, whether they are learning the game for the first time or have years of experience. Hyman, Capwell, and Picascio regularly teach lessons and help newcomers learn the rules.
The club hosts games at various local businesses throughout Naples, including Humble Bee Boutique, giving members an opportunity to support local businesses while enjoying the game.
For many members, the club offers more than just a chance to play. It provides an opportunity to meet new people, stay mentally engaged, and form lasting friendships.
Whether someone is learning the difference between dots, cracks, and bams for the first time or has been playing for decades, organizers said there is always a seat at the table.
The Naples Mahjong Club welcomes players of all experience levels and continues to host events throughout the area, helping introduce one of the country's fastest-growing social games to Southwest Florida.
