COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WINK)—Collier County is moving forward with a project to help ease traffic congestion on Immokalee Road in Golden Gate Estates.
County documents say the project will add a second right-turn lane in the northbound lanes of Immokalee Road heading towards Oil Well Road. The goal is to reduce congestion and better handle traffic. County commissioners voted to move forward with a contractor for the plan on Tuesday.
Some Collier County drivers say an extra turn lane would be a welcome change because the roads can get backed up quickly.
"There's a lot of traffic in the afternoon, so like most people try and cut through from other lanes into like getting farther in, so like it's actually pretty like aggravating whenever they like cut through while you're already in such a long line," Lucky Li said.
Commissioners voted to move forward with Quality Enterprises USA as the project's contractor.
County documents say the total funding required for this contract would be $807,029.10. About three-quarters of that would go to construction on the actual roadway, such as traffic maintenance, excavation, pavement markings, moving a bus stop and more.
The rest of the money would go to traffic signals and lighting, as well as a $50,000 owner's allowance for the contractors in case any unexpected expenses pop up. If the allowance needs to be used, the county will help direct the funds and the contractor will need to submit proper paperwork for any additional work.
Jimmy Riner takes his motorcycle through the right turn almost daily.
He says adding construction to the mix will lead to some backups.
"I know it's going to really mess up traffic for a while they're working, always does," Riner said.
But once it's done, he says an extra turning lane will create some positive change.
"I know we need it. We need an extra lane there that would help stop backing up traffic," Riner said.
Many drivers want to know when construction will start and how long it will last. WINK News reached out to Collier County and is working to get more details.
